Samuel Shipton

(Union Fire-Club)

Mr. Shipton Arrived at Halifax in 1749, where he settled in the "North Suburb". The records indicate that he was accompanied by two males above 16, three females above 16 and three males under 16.

"At Mr. Shipton's, near the North Gate," had for sale "New England and West India rum, loaf and brown sugars, etc. ;" And Mr. Samuel Shipton, "near the North Gate," also advertised that he has "just imported" sashes painted and glazed, 6x10, 7x10 and 8 X 10 glass, and house frames of 2 storeys, 30 x 18. (Royal Gazette)

Samuel Shipton was involved in a real estate dispute on November 14, 1749. Beardsley Glazier claimed that Samuel Shipton had taken possession of lot No. 25 which had been granted to the complainant, and had built a house on it. Shipton, being summoned, complained that Mr. Brewse, the Engineer who had the laying out of the lots, had given him the choice of lot 25 or No. 3, and that he had given up No. 3 to Mr. Crosby. According to the register, Shipton's name had been erased out of No. 3 and Crosby's inserted, which was explicitly forbidden by the Council. The parties settled the dispute by Shipton giving up the lot to Glazier and the latter agreeing to give Shipton materials of all kinds equal to those he had put in the house he had built on Glazier's lot. However, At the Council meeting of May 20, 1750, Cornwallis brought up the fact that “a great many persons had not built upon their lots in town.” Samuel Shipton had put forward a petition stating that Mr. Glasier had “not fulfilled his engagements to furnish him with materials to build another house in the time limited in their agreement.” Council passed a resolution that lot No. 25, which Shipton had built a house on, be returned to him and that the lot laid out for him be given to Mr. Glasier when he’s ready to build.

He died in 1761 and was buried at the Old Burial Grounds on the corner of Barrington St. and Spring Garden Rd. in Halifax, section 4D.
