Union Fire-Club

(????-????)

From Wikipedia:

Robert Sanderson (January 16, 1696 – after 1761) Joined the Union Fire-Club in May of 1755. He was a merchant, ship owner and political figure in Nova Scotia. He was a member of the 1st General Assembly of Nova Scotia.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Robert Sanderson. In 1718, he married Ann Orne. He married Mary Masters in 1727. Sanderson was chosen as the first Speaker of the House of Assembly of Nova Scotia, serving from 1758 to August 1759. He was replaced by William Nesbitt for the second session. With Malachy Salter, he was owner of the privateer Lawrence, which operated during the Seven Years' War (fought between 1754 and 1763). He later left the province; Sanderson was in England in 1761 and appeared before the Board of Trade and Plantations, reporting on "irregularities in the administration of the government of Nova Scotia".

From John G. Leefe DCL:

[...] an election proclamation was issued May 20, 1758 and the House of Assembly convened in Halifax on October 2, 1758. As all Nova Scotians were reminded last year, this was the first representative government in what is now Canada. There were 22 members elected from the counties of Lunenburg, Halifax, Annapolis and Cumberland with Robert Sandersonchosen as the first Speaker.

From archive.org:

Malachy Salter and Robert Sanderson owned at least one vessel together. This was the armed schooner Lawrence, which sailed from Halifax November sixteenth, 1756, "on a six months cruise to the southward against the enemy."

From Marianopolis College:

Robert Sanderson, speaker of the first legislature of Nova Scotia, elected in 1758, made a complaint to the colonial office respecting the grave misconduct of [Charles] Lawrence in many stated particulars, including the release from gaol before trial of prisoners charged with burglary and other grave offences as well as the misapplication of public funds.
