Michael Murphy had a long career with the City's Fire Service. He started as a volunteer with the Union Engine Company, in the No. 2 Hand Division (hand pumped engine) where he went up through the ranks and went on to become a career firefighter with the Halifax Fire Department until his untimely death on September 14, 1915, as a result of injuries received in the line of duty as an engineer.
On his death certificate, he was listed as married, lived at 20 Grafton Street and was 64 years old when he died.
