Hennessey applied to and was accepted in the Union Engine Company for the remunerated position of driver of the hose wagon at engine house No. 7 (Quinpool Street). It was approved by City Council on February 14, 1893.
 
Hennessey retired due to his age and the extent of his injuries caused by the Halifax Explosion. Hennessey was 65 and had 25 years as a permanent and 16 as a volunteer with the Union Engine Company, having been appointed in 1877.
