John Baxter

• Mr. Baxter came to Halifax on board the ship Alderney, as a surgeon. He joined the Union Fire-Club on September 3, 1754. He is listed on the 1759 reprint of the Union Fire-Club's "Rules and Orders".

• From Surgeons, Smallpox and the Poor: A History of Medicine and Social Conditions in Nova Scotia 1749-1799:

• On arrival, John Baxter and the other passenger of the Alderney were encouraged to settle on the other side of George's Island. In other words to found the settlement soon to be known as Dartmouth. But this was short lived because of Indian attacks.

• Robert Grant (another Union Fire-Club member) was dismissed from his position as surgeon and agent at Halifax on 23 September 1757. It is likely that John Baxter was appointed agent on or shortly after 23 September 1757.

• He is listed as the surgeon of Louisbourg Hospital in August of 1760.
