Captain Benjamin Bridge
Benjamin Bridge was born circa 1750 and was married before 1775 to Elizabeth Ingalls. They had a daughter named Sarah; he was a coppersmith (Nova Scotia Archives, 1793) and worked at the Halifax Naval Yard, among other places. He also did some work on the Sambro lighthouse and Government House. Sometime in 1812, Captain Benjamin Bridge resigned and was replaced by William Patterson. Bridge had served at least 22 years as the captain of the company, based on available records (Canadiana, 1812), but it could be as much as 29 years if he were the captain at the time of the Company’s creation. He died before 1830.
On February 16, 1830, the Union Engine Company learned that Sarah, the captain's daughter, was in a “deplorable condition” and needed financial help. The Company gave her £2.10, or roughly four to five hundred dollars, converted into today’s money. They would help her again in October 1831 (Nova Scotia Archives 1826-1835). This goes on to show that the members of this fire company were tight knit.
