1783 The Union Engine Company

Historical period: The Union Engine Company

1783 The Union Engine Company

• In 1783, the Act entitled “an Act for appointing Firewards, ascertaining their Duties, and for punishing Thefts and Disorders at the Time of Fire” was amended again, this time to provide permanence around the Town’s fire engine maintenance and operation.

• It would be pertinent to note that prior to 1793, the members never referred to the Company as the “Union Engine Company,” but rather as either the “Company,” “Engine Company,” or “Fire Engine Company.” The first mention of the name Union Engine Company appeared in the Book of Minutes on January 15, 1793.
